Dharmaधर्म
Cosmic order, righteousness, duty, and moral law in Hinduism.
Detailed Explanation
Dharma is one of the most central and complex concepts in Hinduism, encompassing cosmic order (Rita), righteousness, duty, moral law, and the path of proper conduct. It operates at multiple levels: Sanatana Dharma (eternal universal principles), Varna Dharma (duties based on social function), Ashrama Dharma (duties based on life stage), and Svadharma (individual duty based on one's nature). The Bhagavad Gita's central message revolves around Dharma — Krishna urges Arjuna to fulfill his Svadharma as a warrior. Dharma is one of the four Purusharthas (goals of human life), alongside Artha (prosperity), Kama (desire), and Moksha (liberation). The concept of Dharma also extends to kings (Rajadharma), women (Stri Dharma), and specific circumstances (Apad Dharma, duty in emergencies).
