Vishnu is the Preserver among the Hindu Trimurti, responsible for maintaining the cosmic order (dharma) and sustaining the universe through cycles of creation and dissolution. He is believed to rest on the cosmic serpent Shesha in the primordial ocean of milk (Kshirasagara), awakening whenever the balance between good and evil is disrupted. Vishnu incarnates on earth in various forms known as avatars — ten principal ones according to the Dashavatara tradition — to restore righteousness. His boundless compassion and unwavering commitment to dharma make him central to Vaishnavism, one of the largest denominations within Hinduism.

Iconography & Appearance

Vishnu is typically depicted with dark blue or black skin, symbolizing the infinite cosmos, standing or reclining on the serpent Shesha. He is shown with four arms holding the Sudarshana Chakra (discus), Kaumodaki Gada (mace), Panchajanya Shankha (conch), and a Padma (lotus), representing power, authority, the primordial sound, and purity respectively. He wears the Kaustubha gem on his chest, a Vanamala garland, and the Shrivatsa mark, with Garuda as his divine eagle vehicle.

Key Stories & Legends

The Churning of the Ocean (Samudra Manthan)

When the devas lost their strength due to a curse, Vishnu devised the plan to churn the Ocean of Milk to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality. He took the form of Kurma (tortoise) to support Mount Mandara as the churning rod and later as Mohini to distribute the nectar exclusively to the devas. During the churning, fourteen precious treasures emerged, including Lakshmi who chose Vishnu as her eternal consort. This story highlights Vishnu's role as the supreme strategist and preserver who ensures the survival and prosperity of the cosmic order.

Vishnu's Vamana Avatar

When the benevolent but overly powerful demon king Mahabali conquered the three worlds, the devas sought Vishnu's help. Vishnu incarnated as Vamana, a small Brahmin dwarf, and approached Mahabali asking for just three paces of land. When Mahabali agreed, Vamana grew to cosmic proportions, covering the earth with one step and the heavens with the second. With no space left, Mahabali offered his own head for the third step, and Vishnu, impressed by his devotion, granted him the boon of ruling the netherworld and visiting his people once a year, celebrated as Onam in Kerala.

Vishnu and the Cosmic Sleep (Yoga Nidra)

Between cosmic cycles, Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra, a state of transcendental sleep on the coils of Ananta Shesha in the cosmic ocean. From his navel grows a lotus upon which Brahma is born to begin the next cycle of creation. Lakshmi serves at his feet during this cosmic rest, representing the dormant state of creation and wealth. This image of Vishnu in Yoga Nidra represents the potential of the universe lying in a seed state, waiting to unfold when the time is right for the next cycle of existence.
